Implosion Marbles
Implosion marbles are contemporary art-glass pieces where a floral, fumed or bubble structure is worked on the surface and then encased, so the design collapses inward and floats at the centre of clear glass. The best examples look like a jellyfish or flower suspended mid-sphere.
What to look for
- The imploded shape should be centred and symmetrical.
- Look for unwanted stray bubbles around the design.
- Clarity of the surrounding glass is essential.
- Fumed silver and gold work adds colour shifts as you turn the marble.
Collector notes
Implosions live or die on glass clarity. Any haze, seed or scuff in the clear casing sits between you and the design, so we grade the surface hard on this family — a 9+ implosion has glass that disappears when you hold it. Symmetry matters too: the structure should sit on the marble's axis, not drift to one side, and the petals or tendrils should read evenly all around. These are modern lampwork, signed or unsigned by the artist, and attribution is always stated as what we can see, not what we guess.
